Music: Remedy to Cure a Bad Day

I had a bad day at work yesterday.  I’m talking about the kind of day where I couldn’t finish my share of the work, everything got backed up because I didn’t finish, I’m frustrated with people, and people are frustrated with me (or maybe I was just projecting).  I’m talking about the kind of day when one thing after another goes wrong and the backed up workload gets progressively worse until you just want to bury your head in a pillow and scream until you’re hoarse.  I’m talking about that kind of day.

The height of my frustration came not during the work day, but rather after my shift was over when I was driving home, and for the rest of the night, because I was beating myself up (figuratively speaking) for letting everyone down – or at least I felt like I did.  But long story short, I was able to pick myself back up – with music! …and coffee…

Here’s my playlist for a day when I’m completely down in the dumps:

  1. “The Fighter” – Gym Class Heroes ft. Ryan Tedder (I think Ryan Tedder’s a musical genius!)
  2. “Even if it Breaks Your Heart” – Eli Young Band
  3. “I Won’t Give Up” – Jason Mraz (Amazing artist & outlook on life.)

These songs are literally about not giving up.  I’m new at my job, and the learning process has been a struggle, especially when I take a long time to resolve an issue I’ve never seen before, and as a result, everything else get’s backed up.  But I know that I have even bigger plans for my career, and that this is a necessary stepping stone.  So when I get fed up, these songs remind me that if I really want those bigger plans, I need to fight for them. They remind me not to get hung up on worrying about what others may or may not think, because I’m there to learn, and all that matters is establishing a solid foundation for a bright future.

Some other songs that I find uplifting are less about telling yourself not to give up, but more about thanking the support system around you – whether it be spouses, children, other family members, or friends:

  1. “God Gave Me You” – Blake Shelton
  2. “Bless the Broken Road” – Rascal Flatts

Of course my list of inspirational songs is not this short, but these are currently at the top of the list.  AND, these are just the inspirational songs.  If I started talking about comfort songs, that list would get pretty lengthy…comfort songs go way back to my childhood =)

What’s your remedy to cure a bad day?
