It’s that awkward time of year again when it’s cold in the mornings, hot during the day, and cold in the evenings. Today I wanted to share with you five transitional weather outfit ideas to carry you through until fall. All of these outfits revolve around the idea of balance – balance dressing for warm weather on top with dressing for cooler weather on the bottom, and vice versa. So let’s get into the outfits!
Short Sleeve Top + Midi Skirt
I love midi skirts. They’re so elegant and chic, but when it’s 90 degrees outside, the last thing I want to do is cover up my legs. Transitional weather is when midi skirts really excel, in my opinion. Their length protects my legs from the morning and evening breeze, but they’re still cool enough to wear during the midday heat. If my legs are covered up, I like to balance it out by letting my arms breathe with a short sleeve top. For shoes, I’ll wear sandals on warmer days and sneakers on cooler days.
Long Sleeve Top + Shorts
Conversely, sometimes I’ll cover up on top and let my legs breathe instead. I’ve been enjoying wearing a long sleeve tee or even a super thin sweater (if it’s cool enough out) with a pair of shorts and sandals.
Long Sleeve Mini Dress
To be honest, I never used to see the point of long sleeve dresses (except for sweater dresses). Dresses were for summer, and I would be sweating buckets if I wore long sleeves in the summer heat, so when would I ever wear a long sleeve dress?
I’ve now come to realize that long sleeve dresses are great for transitional weather – especially long sleeve mini dresses. The long sleeves keep my arms warm, while the short dress length keeps me from overheating.
Jumpsuits
Like dresses, jumpsuits are just so fuss free – one piece of clothing and you have a whole outfit. Much like the outfits above, jumpsuits are great for transitional weather because of the balance. Jumpsuits are often short sleeve or sleeveless on top to keep you cool, with long pant legs on the bottom to keep you warm.
Summer Outfit in Fall Colors
Throwing a curveball in here with an outfit that isn’t about balance, because sometimes Mother Nature throws a curveball with a heat wave in the middle of the transitional weather. On these days, if I still want a bit of fall spirit, I’ll wear a summery outfit but in fall colors. Here I’m letting both my arms and legs breathe with a shorter sleeve top and shorts, but I’m incorporating a bit of fall with some shades of brown and loafers.
Throw a Chunky Cardigan On Top Closer to Fall!
As it gets closer to fall, the days will get cooler and too chilly to wear some of these outfits as is. An easy fix is to throw a chunky knit cardigan over any of these outfits for a comfortable, cozy, casual look.
I hope you enjoyed these five transitional weather outfit ideas! What do you like to wear this time of year?

Great outfit formulas, and super examples! I particularly love the green printed midi skirt – I would wear that so much!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like the green skirt as much as I do. It was a hand-me-down, and I’m happy I was able to give it another home!
That’s a great hand-me-down! 😄
Love the idea of wearing summer clothes in fall colors! Thanks for sharing!!
So happy to hear you like the idea! I needed it recently as we were getting 70 degree weather, and then suddenly a heat wave of mid 90s degree weather!
