You’ve just found the perfect “insert item of clothing here.” Should you buy it in all the other colors too?
I used to love watching What Not to Wear back when I had cable and it was still on air. If my memory serves me right, I remember WNTW’s Stacy London and Clinton Kelly balking at the thought of buying clothes in bulk. Ever since, I’ve felt a little twinge every time I consider buying duplicates of any of my clothes.
Being on the thinner end of petite, it can be incredibly difficult to find clothes that fit off the rack. So when I find something that fits, and also brings me joy to wear it, is it so wrong to buy it in another color?
In a previous blog post, I talked about this cheetah print wrap dress from Ann Taylor. At 4’11” and 85 lbs, size 00P fit me off the rack!
Throughout 2019, I’ve been rebuilding my work wardrobe. I’ve been focusing on finding more sophisticated, versatile pieces that I could mix and match, and that I enjoyed wearing. When I first saw this dress, the print immediately drew me in. It was pleasing to my eyeballs. In addition, I felt good when I put this dress on. It hugs in the right places, and gives a very ladylike silhouette.
I started thinking that maybe this dress could be a go-to, workhorse dress in my work wardrobe. I could wear it bare legged in the spring and summer, or with nude or black tights in the winter. So versatile! But is it a faux pas to buy the same dress in bulk, but in different prints?

So What’s the Verdict?
Ultimately, I decided I didn’t care. If I finally managed to find a sophisticated, versatile dress for work that fits off the rack and makes me feel good, why not buy a few more? I repurchased the dress in a red and white colorway, in a pretty heart print. I’m willing to repurchase in even more colors if any catch my eye.
When does buying clothes in bulk become a problem?
The answer: when the clothes don’t bring you joy. If the clothes don’t fit, and don’t bring you joy, and buying in bulk is the easy way out, then your clothes aren’t serving you. In contrast, if you find something really fantastic that makes you feel great, then I think by all means, buy it in bulk, and enjoy.
