Sometimes, you let go of things too soon.
That’s the dilemma I face every time I go to declutter my closet. The fear of regret holds me back from letting go of things, even if I know they don’t bring me joy. Over time, I’ve learned that the sense of relief of letting go of things outweighs the regret of realizing I let go of something I wish I hadn’t. Today, I wanted to share with you a casual work outfit with yoga pants, and a bicycle print shirt from H&M that almost made it into the donation pile.
Decluttering My Closet: The Gray Area
I’ve been on a long journey throughout 2019 to declutter and rebuild my wardrobe. I spent a lot of time figuring out what my style was, which pieces I truly loved in my closet, and which pieces were missing. Some decisions were easy peasy. There were pieces I knew I wanted to keep, and pieces I knew for sure I didn’t. Then there was the gray area.
Some pieces didn’t spark instant joy, but I wasn’t ready to let go of them just yet. So I set them aside, in a separate area of my closet. As I learned about my style, some of the pieces in the “maybe” pile started to make more sense in my wardrobe. One of those pieces was this bicycle print top.
Bicycle Print: Casual Work Outfit With Yoga Pants
I’ve always loved the cute bicycle print on this shirt since the day I bought it from H&M years ago. Despite that, I barely ever wore it. I can’t describe it, but it just never looked right with jeans or any of my work pants.
Then last month, I wrote this blog post called “Can You Wear Yoga Pants as Work Pants?” If you’re looking for the TLDR version: it depends on your specific work environment. Wear what is appropriate for your job, and what makes you feel powerful. But personally, I have begun to wear yoga pants as work pants.
I’ve talked a lot on this blog about the struggles of finding work pants for a thin petite frame. For the most part, I had steered away from even trying to find pants that remotely fit, and resorted to skirts and dresses year round. But that meant I was also excluding styles of shirts that looked better with pants than skirts.
Once I embraced the idea of wearing yoga pants as work pants, I opened the door to styles of shirts that I couldn’t wear before. And lo and behold, the bicycle print shirt suddenly found its place in my closet. I put it on with my black yoga pants, and I thought, “I actually really like this…”
