I nostalgically binge watched all the Lizzie Mcguire episodes on Disney+, and now, I’m bringing 90s platform sandals back, a la Jo Mcguire.
What goes around comes around in fashion, and I think part of it has to do with nostalgia. Fashion from decades past remind us of simpler, carefree – and in my opinion better – times. I’m a 90s baby, so 90s fashion brings back memories of a happy childhood, listening to boybands on my walkman, and playing outside with my friends before social media existed.
When I saw these 90s platform sandals from Steve Madden a year or so ago, my heart started pitter pattering. If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know that I constantly talk about how I’ve tried to be more selective with my purchases. That being said, on rare occasions, I’ll give into weakness. I didn’t have outfits planned whatsoever for these shoes, but I knew I had to have them.
The Inspiration: Jo Mcguire, Britney Spears…
To be honest, these sandals have been sitting in my closet since I purchased them. I couldn’t find the right outfit to wear them with, until I binge watched Lizzie Mcguire. If you’re familiar with the series, you’ll know that Jo Mcguire has a uniform: a top with or without a cardigan, black capri-length bottoms, and black platform shoes.
In addition to Jo Mcguire, when I first saw these sandals, I was reminded of none other than 90s pop princess, Britney Spears:
Now that flared jeans are also making a comeback, perhaps I can recreate Britney’s look too…
90s Platform Sandals: My Attempt
I had had every intention of donating this long cardigan. Then recently, I found a way that I liked to style it for work (which you’ll see in an upcoming blog post!), and pulled it out of my donation pile. When the inspiration struck to recreate Jo Mcguire’s signature look, this cardigan found a second purpose in my wardrobe.
Overall, I liked how this outfit turned out. Here, I styled the sandals with a black tank top and black leggings, but for future attempts, I might try to recreate the look with pants instead.
Are you a 90s baby? Did you watch Lizzie Mcguire as a kid? What do you think about bringing back styles from the past? Let me know in the comments down below!

Thanks for reading!
Can you please tell me where your cardigans from?!
Hi there! It’s from Banana Republic, but unfortunately it’s from years ago, so this exact one is no longer available =(. They currently have some nice long cardigans available that have a similar look, but without the string. I hope that helps!
