Belting a Skirt to Define the Waistline | Spring Work Outfit

Belting Skirt to Define Waistline

Not gonna lie, this is an old-school outfit formula that I defaulted to this past week out of a sheer lack of ideas. Back in the day, when I was still developing my style, I wore this outfit formula quite a bit because it was easy. I wore a top and shoes in matching colors, with a skirt, and a belt at the waist. Nowadays, I try to wear more interesting pieces, but the concept is still the same. Belting a skirt or dress helps to define and accentuate the waistline.

What I Would Change About This Outfit

Ideally, I would have worn a pattern on top or on bottom to add interest to the outfit. I would have chosen a belt without a tail, or twisted the tail into a knot to look intentionally styled.

But that’s real life! Sometimes, when you’re rushing to work (which I almost always am), and all your clothes are in the laundry hamper, and you’re out of ideas, you can’t perfect all the details.

What Else Can You Belt?

I keep a handful of skinny black belts in my closet to belt skirts and dresses, but belts would also look great with a pair of mom jeans or paperbag jeans!

You can see how I styled a maxi dot dress with a skinny black belt here. This tent style of dresses was everywhere last summer. Even with a dress like this, that’s meant to be flowing and loose, you can add a belt around the waist if you find yourself drowning in the fabric.

Most paperbag jeans I’ve seen come with a denim belt built in, but if they don’t, tucking a white tee into a pair of mom jeans or paperbag jeans and adding a belt would look fabulous!
