Adjusting to Dressing for An Office Job

I’ve never had an office job. Well…unless you count the 4 years I spent posting apartment listings for a real estate company in high school for extra cash an office “job”?

I’ve worked for the same company for the past 10 years. It was a patient-facing, fast-paced environment that kept me on my feet every day, for up to 12 hours at a time. A little over 2 months ago, I changed jobs for the first time in a decade. My new job is a desk job. I sit in a cubicle all day, and work essentially business hours. I could go on forever about how positive this change has been for me, but the one change I’m going to talk about today is adjusting to dressing for an office job.

One of the biggest changes that I was most excited about was that I DIDN’T HAVE TO WEAR COMFORT SHOES ANYMORE! For years, I could only wear chunky, orthopedic clogs to work. If I made a poor choice in shoes for a day, or if I wore even my comfiest flats for too many days in a row, my feet would die. When I shopped for work clothes, I built my outfits around my comfort shoes. Do these pants look “good” with my clogs? Would it look strange to wear this blouse with these pants and clogs?

As a heels lover who had accrued more heels than I could practically wear, I was ecstatic when I realized that I now had a regular opportunity to wear heels. Happy sigh. Trousers just look so much nicer with heels than with clogs.

One of the outfits I’ve been enjoying wearing with heels is this outfit above. I’m wearing a smocked blouse from Abercrombie and Fitch in size XXS, black trousers from Betabrand in size XS petite, and black pumps from Cinderella of Boston in size 4M.

I bought these Betabrand pants in a longer inseam (their short petite inseam is floor length for me) with these Cinderella of Boston heels to be my “just in case I get an interview” outfit. Now that I work in an office, they’ve become part of my regular rotation. Likewise, I’m finding that I’m making better use of other pieces in my wardrobe, now that I’m not limited by my work environment. It’s been oddly liberating!

I hope you enjoyed this little “just checking in” post. Aside from adjusting to dressing for an office job, I’ve been adjusting to so many other aspects of the job – learning the ropes, working my personal life around my new schedule, etc. Blogging has been put on the back burner for a bit lately, but I’m hoping things will settle down and I’ll find a new rhythm.

. . . .
