My husband says that I am the biggest couch potato. It’s probably a fair assessment. I’d much rather lounge on the couch and online shop on my phone than get up to do….well, anything really. But even this couch potato enjoys finding a quiet trail and going for a stroll to calm the mind.
We used to go for walks fairly regularly if the weather was nice out. Ever since we moved house last August, things have been a little hectic, and we haven’t had a chance to scope out new trails near our new house yet.
Last last weekend, we had a construction crew at our house finishing our basement. We didn’t want to go anywhere too far from the house in case they needed us, and it was a beautiful sunny day, so we decided to Google nearby trails. Lo and behold there was a quaint little hidden trail only 10 minutes away!
When I say hidden, I mean HIDDEN. The GPS kept saying we had arrived, but the entrance was so hidden from the road, we had to drive past it 3 or 4 times before we could find it. Maybe that’s why the trail was so quiet – because no one can find it! We only saw one other hiker the entire time we were there.
I have a rather anxious mind, and I find having these calming moments in nature, doing nothing, to be rather soothing. As I’m writing this blog post, I’m sitting outside on my deck, comfortably squished into my sectional. Occasionally, I lean my head back onto the cushions, and stare up at the sky. It’s perfectly blue, not a cloud in sight, and the many trees lining my backyard look beautiful against the sky. And even though part of my brain is fighting not to think about work, and fighting not to let my heart do that tight, clenching, racing thing it likes to do, for a moment – I feel a sense of calm in the mind.
Until next time…
