It’s that time of year when everybody is sharing their new year’s resolutions; and if I had any, I would too. For me, New Year’s day doesn’t mean much more than having to remember to write the correct year on anything I’m dating. Although the new year didn’t have a lot of significance for me, something that did have a little impact on my day-to-day was the official start of the winter season on December 21st, because that was when I started seasonally rotating my wardrobe for winter!

How I Currently Seasonally Rotate My Wardrobe

Aside from the obvious putting away tank tops/shorts/dresses and bringing out long sleeves/sweaters/leggings, I also associate certain colors with certain seasons. I associate bright colors with summer and spring; creams, browns, and jewel tones with fall; and blues, grays, and whites with winter (I think because they remind me of snow and ice). So in the fall, when I bring out my sweaters, I bring out the ones in “fall colors;” then in the winter, I bring out the ones in “winter colors.”

I should mention that for some items of clothing, when I say I “bring them out” for the season, I’m speaking figuratively. My clothes are currently stored in three different places, which admittedly, I don’t love. Theoretically, I have a hanging closet for the current season’s clothes, and a dresser for pajamas and off-season clothes. However, collectively, I have so many jeans and shorts that it just wouldn’t make sense to hang them all, so those two categories stay folded in the dresser year round. My sweaters stay folded and on a shelf in a spare bedroom year round, as I go back and forth whether hanging sweaters will stretch them out, and whether I have enough hangers to hang them all!

Pros & Cons and Thoughts for the Future

Pros: The main pro of seasonally rotating my wardrobe is that when I bring out the clothes for the current season, I’m reminded of how much I love some of the pieces, because I haven’t seen them for months. I also like only having the things I’m currently wearing in front of me to choose from, rather than having half my closet be full of items I won’t wear for months.

Cons: The main con of my current system is the inconvenience of storing things in three different places. If I rethink how I store my clothes, I wonder if there is a possibility of fitting everything into one room (in other words, just my closet and my dresser, and nothing in the spare room).

Thoughts for the future: I would love to change up how I currently store my clothes, and find a solution that’s both pleasing for my mind and convenient. Right now, putting away my clothes feels like such a chore because everything is so spread out, and I have to use a stool to reach the shelf in the closet of the spare bedroom. I’ve looked into putting shelving on the floor of my hanging closet and moving all my sweaters there for easier access, but I haven’t been able to find shelves that will be big enough to fit my sweaters and that work with the space I have. I’m reluctantly considering putting an end to the seasonal rotations and hanging all my sweaters instead, but I do worry about stretching them out, and I’m not super keen on seeing my sweaters come summer when it’s 90 degrees outside!
