H&M Petite Review | What I Kept & What I Returned

Much like my tastes in books, movies, and music, my tastes in clothes is all over the place. I love wearing colorful things, especially in the spring and summer; but equally, I love the simplicity and versatility of neutral things too. I recently tried a few neutral pieces from H&M, and I wanted to do a petite review (as H&M does not carry petite sizing), and share my thoughts on what I kept and what I returned.

Rib-Knit Midi Dress

KEEP

I’ve always loved the look of a midi skirt or dress paired with some ankle boots, but I could never seem to get it quite right. Eventually I realized it was because the midi skirts I owned weren’t actually midi skirts on me. At 4’11” tall, my midi skirts were hitting me somewhere between a midi and maxi length, and just didn’t look right when paired with my ankle boots. I started scouring the stores where I usually shop, but couldn’t find anything that would be the right length on me. Then by a happy accident, I stumbled across this dress from the kids’ section at H&M. It looked a little long on the model, but I imagined that on an adult with a little more curve, it might fit a little shorter. I decided to give it a try, and it was a perfect fit!

I ordered size 12/14 (10-12Y) in the light beige color, which is now sold out, but it’s still available in a beautiful khaki green color.

Sweatshirt

KEEP

Like the midi dress, this sweatshirt was an easy decision. I have quite a few skirts and dresses similar to the one above, and I just wanted something warm that I could throw on top so that I could wear them year round, even when it gets chilly out. The description for this sweatshirt says it’s regular length, but I’d say it’s more of a cropped length. For me, the cropped length was perfect for pairing with my high-waist skirts and dresses, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re interested in this sweatshirt and not looking for a cropped fit!

I ordered size XXS in black.

Shoulder-Pad Sweater & Rib Knit Skirt Set

H&M Petite Review: Sweater and Skirt Knit Set
Return

I have a soft spot for sets, and went back and forth for over a week on whether I should keep this one. I loved how chic the black stripes looked against the ivory, and thought the skirt would pair nicely with the black sweatshirt from before as well. Admittedly, I’m not keen on shoulder pads, so if I had kept this set, I would have snipped those out.

In the end, the deciding factor for me was the length of the skirt. I liked how it looked with black flats, which is how I’m wearing it in the picture above, but it was the only pair of shoes I could see myself pairing it with. The length of the skirt was too long, and just looked off when I tried pairing it with ankle boots (the same problem I talked about with the midi dress!). I just couldn’t justify keeping a skirt that I knew would have such limited use.

I ordered both the sweater and the skirt in size XS.

Sequined Dress

Return

While the sequins on this dress were fun and the length of the dress was decent, the dress overall was massive. I added my own belt to cinch in the waist because otherwise it felt like I was drowning in the dress, especially since the sleeves were too long (if I had my arms down, the sleeves would have covered my fingertips!). For reference, an ideal sleeve length for me is anywhere between 21″-23″ from the top of the shoulder seam to the wrist (based off of measuring the sleeves of my jackets for a review I did of the All Saints Dalby leather jacket here).

I ordered this dress in size XS in dark gray.

I hope you enjoyed this H&M petite review, and seeing my thought process for what I kept and what I returned!
